Math Carnival
6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
The date scheduled for making up our snow day is April 9th.
Our second quarter of school is off to a great start!
Math: Students are working with patterns, counting coins, using turn-around facts, and solving number stories.
Writing: We have added two more pages to our story packets. The children are now able to stretch their stories across five pages.
Reading: Our class created a chart about strong readers. We used interactive writing to capture these ideas on our poster. If you weren’t able to see the poster during parent-teacher-student conferences, it will be in our hall for a few more days.
Spelling: During this quarter of school, students will continue to practice spelling our high frequency words. When words are sent home with your child, please ask your child to spell the words he/she can read.
Social Studies: We have discussed what we already know about Thanksgiving. As we read more information about Thanksgiving, we will add our new learning to a classroom chart.
Science: The students are studying the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. During the first two weeks of school, they observed the chrysalis and butterfly stages and wrote about them in their journals. They are now learning information from books and videos. The students will also make a classroom poster about the life cycle.
Reading: We have discussed the importance of finding just-right or good-fit books in the classroom and at the library. This is something we will continue to work with throughout the year.
Math: The children are working on the first quarter math goals which include counting by ones, fives, tens, and twos. We have also been using the Smart Board, working with tallies, and using number grids during whole group and partner activities.
Writing Workshop: The students are learning to plan their writing. Students are encouraged to think about what happened first, next, and last ( beginning, middle, and end) before they write the words. They are amazing authors!.
